The Ultimate Raw File Tweaker: Colorchecker Passport

As raw files become the common currency of high-end photographry a widening array of tools is arriving to help photographers get the most from them. I've been using SpyderCube from Datacolor/Colorvision for awhile to help set white and black points along with white balance for color critical situations. But recently I've added a new tool to my tweakers arsenal--Colorchecker Passport from X-Rite. Read on to learn about it... Read more »

Canon Defies Science with 16MP 100K ISO with Smaller Sensor

Following closely on the heels of Nikon's D3S announcement which raised the bar in low light digital photography Canon has just launched the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV which ups the ante even further by claiming the same rated ISO performance with a greater 16MP resolution in a smaller sensor (APS-H, which has a 1.3 crop factor) allowing the use of smaller and lighter lenses and reducing vignetting issues. Nikon D3S: 100,000 ISO!, HD Video, $5200 Coming Soon

Nikon today announced the D3S, a worthy "mid-life" upgrade to their workhorse pro D-SLR the D3. The biggest change is an upgraded sensor featuring the potential for shooting at ISOs up to a staggering 102,000. Realistically the typical ISO range seems to have been bumped up by 1-2 stops over the D3. The new sensor also captures HD Video, including in very low light conditions. The FX sized sensor retains the 12MP resolution of the D3, but adds a 1.2x crop mode for 8MP shooting with a slight telephoto effect--no doubt helpful when using those lenses which vignette with the FX sensors. It also doubles the buffer size and adds a quiet shutter mode among other nifty new features. It is expected to ship from Nikon in late November for $5199 street price. Full Press Release below...

If they don't then they and possibly the "advertiser" involved will be liable. Let's look at how this will work... Read more »

DPS 7-07: The Future of Imaging--Camera 2.0, Beyond HDR & more--Event Update & Product News

Welcome to DPS 7-07. We hope you had a great summer. We sure did, highlighted by our July trips to Alaska for Brown Bear photography. Next year's trips are already mostly full so if you'd like to join us please sign up soon. Closer to home we've also announced our two Texas bird photo safaris for April and we still have one opening on our African "trip of a lifetime" photo safari in November. In the meantime I had a great time speaking at a symposium on High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging at Stanford which has given me lots of new energy to re-capture many local scenes using new techniques.
