Alaska Brown Bear Safari Trip Report & 2012 Announcement

Each year I think our Alaska safaris can’t get any better. But this year, our twelfth of visiting with the Bears and Puffins alongside the spectacular volcanoes and the mountains lining the Cook Inlet was the best yet. We had two fun groups (kept small as always so we can move around with the bears and provide lots of personal instruction) and our daughter Annie helping with lessons on Photo Books and with the gear hauling…

July is a special time for the bears of the Cook Inlet. Just about all the moms have brought their cubs out into the open along the water to graze, to learn to clam and to start thinking about fishing. It is still early enough that the bears are fairly relaxed and haven’t starting panicking in their fall rush to put on weight for winter. We were treated to many scenes of cubs and moms playing and mothers nursing both spring cubs (born this winter in the den and first out in the world only a couple months ago) and “yearling” cubs—last years spring cubs in their final year before being kicked out by their moms.

Southeast Asia Trip Report–Destination Myanmar (Burma)

"Intha Style" boats are family cars for the villagers living on Inle Lake. Here the father takes his daughter to school and his wife to market before beginning his day fishing.After a busy five days in Cambodia we reluctantly took our leave and jetted off to Myanmar. After a short connection in the Bangkok airport (Bill was ecstatic to find they had Durian ice cream there but the foot massages were a bigger hit with most of the folks) we arrived in Yangon (formerly Rangoon and still the largest city in Myanmar) in time to see sunset on the way into town. We get asked a lot about whether it is difficult to get permission to travel in Myanmar and the answer is absolutely not—tourists are welcomed. And once there no country has friendlier people…

My Day with Moose & Joe


One of the downsides of being a nature photographer is limited opportunities to socialize. There's no water cooler at the office. So it's always fun when I get a chance to shoot with some of my friends. I was fortunate today to spend the day with Moose Peterson and Joe McNally while they co-lead their landscape workshop in San Francisco with Laurie Excell and Kevin Dobler. Their DLWS series has become immensely popular. I was fortunate to co-teach the very first one with Moose in Moab many years ago but now there is quite a large team at each one and the events are longer and better than ever...
