Our local and highly endangered San Francisco Garter Snake is one of the world's most beautiful snakes. But it is so rare than when the San Francisco and San Diego Zoos wanted some to display they bought them from collectors in Europe rather than risking catching any more from the remaining wild population of possibly less than 100 snakes--all in San Mateo County.
