Images of The Day!
Whatever happened to the popular Picture of The Day thread??? It's been a little dead lately, where are those great images?

Styx (and the rest of the gang),
Where have you been? Share some recent shots guys!

Although its been really reeeaaallllyyy hot here in So. Cal we had a surprsie thunderstorm yesterday. It filled the near dry water holes and local creeks beds. Found this GBH, he comes to the same water hole often but is a little shy.

Paul, very nice Sparrow shot. And I like you images in the Hummers thread as well.

Patrick, 'Great' Blue Heron.

We did not have the right weather here. Too humid and to hot. And it was raining most of the time. The bird feeder does not work either, because the birds are mostly in the north and they get enough foot from somewhere else. And we prepare for Europe. Where we go in 1 1/2 weeks.
Anyway, we have a lot of spiders here. I got my SB80DX, SD8A and finally my converter clamp.
Where I can change from horizontal to vertical. Like the L clamp. but cheaper and I can install either the D1 or the D100. Don't need 3 clamps. You get this clamp for $100 from RealyRightStuff.

Attached is the result of this gear. A Black-And-Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope aurantia).
The image was made with the D1 and 105 f/2.8 Macro. Manual. 1/10sec @ f/15, Gitzo tripod, SB80dx DTTL -2,5, cloudy -3, Nik Sharpener Pro, no crop.

Enjoy

Patrick, Good thread and great photos all.

After seeing Styx awesome spider shot I started thinking close up.

This was shot today with D1x, 300mm, 125sec at f13. Cropped slightly cause the critter had no tail.

Patrick - beautiful pictures! Woody - Swallowtails all have long tails and are attractive to preditors partially because of their large size. It is unususal to find a swallowtail that is intact and with both tails. More often than not you will observe them with peices missing from the wing and/or one or both tail(s) missing. The best time to get them is shortly after the pupa emerges from the chrysalis as a butterfly.
Interestingly, the Monarch butterfly is poisonous and is not bothored by preditors. Preditors pretty much leave the Viceroy alone because it is very similar to the Monarch. These butterflys are majestic and pretty well intact when observed.

Great images everyone.

I have not been shooting for awhile since I wrenched my knee. However this morning, I looked outside my dining room window and saw this guy grazing near my fence. By the time I grabbed my camera, hobbled downstairs and tried to open my sliding glass door with the squeeky screen he had moved towards the woods. I discovered it was not my noise but some guy walking his rottweiler behind the house that spooked him. I had to crop the photo since I had the head and cap of this guy entering my photo from the right.
D-100 200-400 lens 5.6 1/8 iso 200. Shot on auto since I didn't have time to take a meter reading.

Hope he is back later today for better shots.

Nice picture, Deborah! Bill Chafins - Thanks for your assistance on the Great Smokey Mountains. We saw a lot of deer in Cades Cove as you said - along with a lot of people. We didn't see any bears there; however, we saw one in Cataloochee along with the Elk. We just missed a Mama with two cubs up in the Elkmont area. I got this picture of a doe Virginia Whitetail in the Elkmont area. I had my seven grandchildren with me so it was a wonderful experience for them. We saw several other deer in that area. There were very few people in that area the day we were there. Picture taken with a D1X with the 24 to 85 MM G series lens.

Woody,

That's a great shot! Love the color...

That spider wasn't mean, she was more scared than I was, heh heh. But this guy was a little more aggressive.

Woody,
Actually the camera was in for a software upgrade (finally). I was off shooting items for a book last week in Houston so have not had much time for outdoor photography, especially when it's hard to stand with a bum knee. It's getting better and I'm off to Arizona in a few weeks for business. Hope to get some night time lighting shots or critters. Maybe something like this guy.

No lizard, though...

I just wish I knew if she grabbed a field mouse while it was eating a grasshopper, or maybe a really fat grasshopper, or possibly a dragonfly...?

I just can't tell

Here is a shot of a Blacktail deer taken a couple evenings ago with a D100, and a 80-400VR lens at 400mm, ISO 800 1/60 sec-F5.6, WBAuto-3 and Auto sharpening. Also needs to be said that it was hand held out the window of a running truck with the VR turned on in the lens. The 80-400 VR is taking lots of abuse in its quaility and ability but can produce good images even under adverse conditions. (Truck wasn't moving just running) hcarl

hcarl, There is something to be said for VR and I think you said it. Super shot of blacktail.

I never thought I would call a deer UGLY, but this bugeyed, longeared,no tailed critter was just plain UGLY.

Great shots everyone, Woody

Thanks Woody for the comment. Have attached a shot from same time of a Pretty Blacktail Doe. Deer can look a little scruffy at times and during the spring when they loose their hair is one of them. But come August when they have the new hair both Mule deer family as well as Whitetails are gorgeous. Had a black bear eat the apples that my wife put out for the deer last night so will see if I can catch it tonight with the D100. hcarl

Kevin, Thats a mighty famous spot you were in. Hope to visit Alaska next year.

My image for today while not WILDlife is rather domestic but unusual being a different breed than normally seen.

Mini Horse only a little over 3 feet tall but a beautiful creature.

Here is a shot I took from a sailboat leaving Newport Beach CA. There was no wind that day, so a nap seemed like the better idea!

David, I love what neon does to a photo. Yery nice shot.

To tell you more about my last image, It's only a test. Something to do when I retire.

One more image along that line and I'll go back to wildlife and nature for now.

I need some advice on this photo. I was in AZ and took several photos of these little Sonoran cottontails but their eyes were red with or without a flash. Was I doing something wrong?

can you give more info on how you were shooting....

Paul,
Thanks for your post. I had the SB 80DX Flash on the hot shoe with a soft box on it. The flash was sitting at an angle. I've never had this much red eye when shooting other animals and thought maybe it was just that these rabbits are more subseptible to red eye. I do have one shot without the flash but the eye looks very dark red or almost black. They were in a shaded area under the cover of trees.
I was shooting with the D100, WB Cloudy and -3 EV. Most were at about a 5.6 exposure with a Nikon 70-300 lens.
