Wildlife & Scenic Photos

As the light fades on the Savuti desert, even the warm weather isn't enough to keep the feeling of isolation and cold from creeping in. We aren't completely alone, though, as you can see the evidence of dozens of elephants who've been there before us during the day.

Not all of the Zambesi River is whitewater. Here, above Victoria Falls, is a serene vista hiding the Hippos and Elephants we had seen crossing the river just before sunset.

These Open-Billed Storks are almost certainly unaware of what a perfect picture they make against the setting Sun. Chobe Park had several large flocks of these birds, but none was more colorful than this one.

An unusually quiet dawn at Barking Dog Rapid on the American River near Coloma, California--heart of the Gold Country. Later in the day the water will be raging over the rocks and the whitewater rafters will be out in force.

The first rays of sunlight crawl up Alpine Springs at its outlet into Fallen Leaf Lake, one of the wonders of nature near Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Mountains.

The first rower of the morning gets the cleanest water. There is no sound except for the oars slipping in the water and a family of ducks feeding on the surface plants nearby. Only the blue pre-dawn light illuminates the scene. Early morning is definitely the most peaceful time of day on Fallen Leaf Lake in the Sierras.

Only a few feet upstream from the outlet the water catches the light and turns it into an impressionist painting as it flows over the rocky riverbed.

While it looks like a raging waterfall, this tumbling wave is really less than a foot across. Shooting up close standing in the water you can see the explosive power evident in even a small rapid.

Before the day's winds come up or the early morning rowers are awake, Stanford Sierra Camp is a quiet picture postcard reflected in the nearly mirror flat water of Fallen Leaf Lake.

Any one who has sailed in the Tahoe area knows that the Lakes there are rarely this calm. The glassy water presented a unique shot of Sawmill Cove from the Spillway at the North end of Fallen Leaf Lake.

The end of a quiet day in Northern Michigan, looking West over Lake Michigan. The calm lake belies the storm ahead, brought in by the closing clouds.

To show you don't have to go far from home for exotic looking pictures. This sunset was taken from near the Stanford Dish, of a majestic Heritage Tree one Winter evening.
