Google buys nik Software to get Snapseed: Promises filters have a future for serious photographers

Yesterday Google announced it is acquiring much loved digital photo filter maker nik Software to get its hands on nik's award-winning Snapseed mobile app. Google desperately needs an edge to help Google+ gain ground on Facebook, and counter FB's acquisition of Instagram. T

he concern for everyone who uses nik's impressive filter collections is that they might get neglected. Fortunately, Google has assured nik that it values the pro and prosumer market and intends to keep going with the filters (Google itself is full of literally hundreds of camera-crazy shooters, with many dozens of them from Sergey on down owning Nikon D800 and D800e models alone).

That's great news for all of us, and perhaps Google's added resources and talent will allow for even faster development of new features.

Congrats to our friends at nik!
